Penzance Railway Station car rental - Travel Guide |
 |
Occupying a sheltered position at the northwest corner of Mount's Bay, PENZANCE has always been a major port, but most traces of the medieval town were obliterated at the end of the sixteenth century by a Spanish raiding party. Today the dominant style of Penzance is Georgian, particularly at the top of Market Jew Street (from Marghas Jew , meaning "Thursday Market"), which climbs from the harbour and the train and bus stations. At the top of the street is the green-domed Victorian Market House , before which stands a statue of Humphry Davy (1778-1829), the local woodcarver's son who pioneered the science of electrochemistry and invented the life-saving miners' safety-lamp, which his statue holds.
Turn left here into Chapel Street , which has some of the town's finest buildings, including the flamboyant Egyptian House , built in 1835 to contain a geological museum but subsequently abandoned until its restoration twenty-odd years ago. Across the street, the Union Hotel dates from the seventeenth century, and originally housed the town's assembly rooms. If your interest is roused by the art scene that flourished hereabouts at the turn of the nineteenth century, head for Penlee House Gallery and Museum on Morrab Road (Mon-Sat: May-Sept 10am-5pm; Oct-April 10.30am-4.30pm; £2, free on Sat), which holds the biggest collection of the works of the Newlyn School - impressionistic harbour scenes, frequently sentimentalized but often bathed in an evocatively luminous light. There are frequent exhibitions, and also displays on local history. At the bottom of Morrab Road, the Art Deco Jubilee Pool (mid-May to mid-Sept daily 10.30am-6pm; £1.70) bulges out of the Promenade into Mount's Bay, a tidal, salt-water (though chlorinated) open-air swimming pool, built to mark the Silver Jubilee of George V in 1935. It's a classic example of the style, and non-swimmers can stroll around (60p) to get a closer view of the pool and bay.
